House Welcome to our bed & breakfast. Down East magazine described Sorrento as one of Maine's best kept secrets and we happily share its delights with you. Walk up our path, under the vine-covered arbor, through the flower garden, and enter our 1840s farmhouse for a special Down East Maine visit.

Bedroom In the morning the smell of freshly baking bread or muffins will entice you from your wonderfully comfortable bed. We serve a full breakfast featuring entrees of traditional breakfast fare, with our special touch: french toast with a hint of orange flavor, served with a choice of blueberry sauce or real maple syrup; or our Bass Cove Breakfast Casserole, a sort-of omelet and a favorite with our guests. We serve our home-grown fruits and berries.

Perhaps the first stop on your Down East adventure will be Sorrento harbor where you'll discover why, since the 1800s, captains of industry, writers and artists have made Sorrento their summer retreat. Victorian homes of a bygone era sit proudly along the shore with a view of Frenchman Bay and Cadillac Mountain. Newer "cottages" nestle in the wooded areas of Sorrento harbor, which is shared by fishing boats and pleasure craft. The influence of the sea is unmistakable: gulls circling overhead, the salt air smell, a refreshing seabreeze on a warm summer day.

Our area is home to the Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park with many spots for climbing, hiking, kayaking. For real Down East flavor there are church suppers, fairs, and festivals, flea markets and art galleries. End the day with dinner in one of the very good local restaurants (home cooking or haute cuisine), a walk on the beach (Sorrento's sunsets rival those of its Italian namesake), or star gazing -- an amazing number of stars can be seen away from the city lights. Nearby Ellsworth and Bar Harbor offer a more active night life, and Mount Desert Island, home to the main section of Acadia National Park, provides outdoor opportunities for the novice to the most advanced explorer. We are happy to help plan your activities.

Your hosts: Mary Ann operates WordCraft Editorial Services in her "electronic cottage"; she is also a spinner, weaver, writer and the herb & flower gardener. Mike is a group-home counselor, photographer and a 2-time Harry S. Truman Manure Pitchoff Champion at Maine's Common Ground Country Fair. We are a "green business": the hot water (plenty of it) is mostly solar heated and we clean with nontoxic products.

Winter Scene We are smokefree, open year-round. Our two Maine coon cats look out from the breakfast room across the winter landscape toward Bass Cove -- waiting to welcome you into our home.

Prices range from $50 to $75 per night (single occupancy, plus 7% tax). A discount is offered for stays longer than 4 nights. A one-bedroom apartment is available as a rental unit by the week.
